Cell phone placed in a pocket does not comply with safety limits

Did a small Finnish company, CELLRAID, Ltd, do ‘volkswagen’ to the telecom industry by showing lack of compliance? In this story, for the first time, are shown measurements results indicating that placing a cell phone in a pocket might cause radiation exposures higher than permitted by the current safety standards.

*****

There are very stringent exhaust limits in USA. Volkswagen cars did not meet them. So, software was added to Volkswagen cars to “help” them be “compliant” with the US EPA requirements. Discrepancy between what is doable in lab setting and what is not so easily doable in real life led Volkswagen to do what it did.

There are safety limits for radiation emission from cell phones. In cell phones used in real life and stored mostly in pockets, these safety limits would be difficult to meet. So, when the standard laboratory tests were developed for measuring radiation emissions from cell phones to assess their compliance with safety limits, a “loophole” was “somehow” introduced to the laboratory tests permitting measurements at a distance from the surface of the test dummy (= at a distance from the users body). The difference between Volkswagen software and cell phone testing loophole is that the software was illegal whereas the “loophole” is legal.

This “loophole” distance varies, not only between different manufacturers but also between different cell phone models from the same manufacturer. Some phones meet safety limits already at 1cm away from the body but others need to be 2.5cm away from the body to meet safety limits.

Electro-hypersensitivity: What you need to know about the allergy of the 21st century

In the past it has been called “yuppie flu” and “microwave disease”. Its symptoms include unexplained allergies, whistling in the ears, tachycardia and cardiac arrhythmias, fatigue, numbness of the head, constant headaches, etc. Are you also affected by the growing electromagnetic pollution from cell phone masts, Wi-Fi networks, cordless phones etc?

Electrohypersensitivity

Scientists today are linking the increase of electromagnetic pollution with many unexplained symptoms that afflict more and more every day:

  • Nausea, headaches and migraines
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Numbness in the face or other body parts
  • Dry eyes and sight problems
  • Inability to concentrate and unexplained fatigue
  • Depression
  • Tachycardia and cardiac arrhythmia
  • Hyperactivity and insomnia
  • Redness and rashes
  • Dryness in the throat and mouth
  • Swollen sinuses and symptoms rhinitis

The “allergic” reaction to artificial electromagnetic radiation is called “electrohypersensitivity”, it has been recognized by the World Health Organization and is considered likely to influence in the following years a significant proportion of the population in developed countries.

In the past the term “microwave illness” has been used to describe symptoms of employees working near broadcasting antennas and radars and the term “yuppie flu” for symptoms of corporate executives overexposed to mobile phones and electronic office equipment.

“Sensitivity to EMF has been given the general name “Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity” or EHS. It comprises nervous system symptoms like headache, fatigue, stress, sleep disturbances, skin symptoms like prickling, burning sensations and rashes, pain and ache in muscles and many other health problems. Whatever its cause, EHS is a real and sometimes a disabling problem for the affected persons. Their EMF exposure is generally several orders of magnitude under the limits of internationally accepted standards.” World Health Organization [1]

Medical associations warn

The Austrian Medical Association notes [2]:

“There has been a sharp rise in unspecific, often stress-associated health problems that increasingly present physicians with the challenge of complex differential diagnosis. A cause that has been accorded little attention so far is increasing electrosmog exposure at home, at work and during leisure activities, occurring in addition to chronic stress in personal and working life. It correlates with an overall situation of chronic stress that can lead to burnout.”

The Freiburger Appeal [3] from the Union of Environmental Medicine, Germany (IGUMED),signed by thousands of doctors and scientists from around the world sounded the alarm:

“We have observed, in recent years, a dramatic rise in severe and chronic diseases among our patients, especially:

  • Learning, concentration, and behavioural disorders (e.g. attention deficit disorder, ADD)
  • Extreme fluctuations in blood pressure, ever harder to influence with medications
  • Heart rhythm disorders
  • Heart attacks and strokes among an increasingly younger population
  • Brain-degenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s) and epilepsy
  • Cancerous afflictions: leukemia, brain tumors

Moreover, we have observed an ever-increasing occurrence of various disorders, often misdiagnosed in patients as psychosomatic:

  • Headaches, migraines
  • Chronic exhaustion
  • Inner agitation
  • Sleeplessness, daytime sleepiness
  • Tinnitus
  • Susceptibility to infection
  • Nervous and connective tissue pains, for which the usual causes do not explain even the most conspicuous symptoms.

We can no longer believe this to be purely coincidence, for:

  • Too often do we observe a marked concentration of particular illnesses in correspondingly HFMR-polluted areas or apartments;
  • Too often does a long-term disease or affliction improve or disappear in a relatively short time after reduction or elimination of HFMR pollution in the patient’s environment;
  • Too often are our observations confirmed by on-site measurements of HFMR of unusual intensity.

On the basis of our daily experiences, we hold the current mobile communications technology (introduced in 1992 and since then globally extensive) and cordless digital telephones (DECT standard) to be among the fundamental triggers for this fatal development.

One can no longer evade these pulsed microwaves. They heighten the risk of already-present chemical/physical influences, stress the body’s immune system, and can bring the body’s still-functioning regulatory mechanisms to a halt. Pregnant women, children, adolescents, elderly and sick people are especially at risk.

Our therapeutic efforts to restore health are becoming increasingly less effective: the unimpeded and continuous penetration of radiation into living and working areas , particularly bedrooms, an essential place for relaxation, regeneration and healing, causes uninterrupted stress and prevents the patient’s thorough recovery.

In the face of this disquieting development, we feel obliged to inform the public of our observations, especially since hearing that the German courts regard any danger from mobile telephone radiation as “purely hypothetical” (see the decisions of the constitutional court in Karlsruhe and the administrative court in Mannheim, Spring 2002).

What we experience in the daily reality of our medical practice is anything but hypothetical! We see the rising number of chronically sick patients also as the result of an irresponsible “safety limits policy”, which fails to take the protection of the public from the short- and long-term effects of mobile telephone radiation as its criterium for action. Instead, it submits to the dictates of a technology already long recognized as dangerous. For us, this is the beginning of a very serious development through which the health of many people is being threatened.”

More health warnings..

The first recorded case

Per Segerbäck, was a telecommunications engineer, that was working from the early 80’s as a senior executive in Ellemtel, a subsidiary of the Swedish company mobile phones Ericson and he helped develop the mobile networks that today have spread in every part of world.

After 10 years of work he and almost all his colleagues had continuous nausea, headaches and skin redness. Because the found relief only outside the office, the came to the conclusion that these symptoms were due to the elevated electromagnetic radiation from the cell phone antennas, computers, fluorescent lightings etc.

Ericson company wanted to keep Segerbäck, so they electromagneticaly shielded his office, they replaced his computers with low EFM ones and gave him electromagnetic shielded clothes to wear so he could move out of the office.

In the mid 90’s, when the first mobile networks began to appear in Stockholm and the avoidance of the radiation was impossible, Segerbäck retired to a farmhouse in the countryside. There he lives so far away from mobile phone masts and the electricity network, using an external battery 12Volt for essential needs. [4]

How chronic exposure to artificial electromagnetic radiation can lead to health problems

Dr. Blank, a professor at Columbia University and researcher in bioelectromagnitism explains that our cells have a stressful reaction to artificial electromagnetic fields as they do with other environmental toxins (heavy metals, etc.) [5].

The human DNA functions as an antenna which receives even low power low and high frequency signals and produces stress proteins.

The mechanism of adaptation to stress triggers our hormonal system to cope with any challenge presented. Unfortunately it is designed to operate for a temporary period.

Chronic production of stress proteins, as is the case of constant exposure to multiple sources of radiation is:

  • associated with sleep problems, depression, headaches, gastric and skin problems, obesity, heart disease, asthma, infections, etc. [6]
  • exhausts the immune system and leads to the appearance of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s Lyme, lupus, disease Crohn, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, etc. [7]

Radiaitonsources

What is the reason for the great increase of electrohypersensitivity cases the past few years

The increase of electrohypersensitivity incidents is due to the large increase in the quantity and the variety of radiation signals to which the public is exposed in recent years.

  • Exposure to low-frequency radiation has increased significantly due to greater use of electricity, while simple sinusoidal signal of 50-60Hz power grid has been deformed because of high frequency harmonics.
  • The phenomenon of ‘contamination’ of the electrical grid with harmonics, is called “Dirty Electricity”, due to the widespread use of electronic non-linear load devices (fluorescent lamps, AC adapters, electronic dimmer switches, inverter air conditioners, plasma TVs, photovoltaic systems, etc.) and has already been linked to electrohypersensitivity [8]
  • Also, levels of high frequency radiation have multiplied because of the rapid development of telecommunications (mobile telephony and Internet).
  • According to Professor Paul Doyon of the University Kyushu [9], wireless radiation can cause numerous biological effects that are found in people with chronic fatigue syndrome: increased oxidative damage and decrease of catalase, glutathione, CoQ10, SOD etc., cellular calcium outflow, mitochondrial dysfunction, reduction of Natural Killer (NK) cells, reduced norepinephrine levels, reduction of 5-HT (serotonin precursor) etc.

The size of the problem and its impact on the lives of those affected

Electrohypersensitivity today is recognized as a disability in Sweden, where it affects 3% of the population (approximately 250,000 people). Great Britain and Canada are also considering to recognize this novel disability.

Researchers Hallberg and Oberfeld studying the growth rates of electrohypersensitivity cases, predicted that by 2017, 50% of the population will display such symptoms [10].

“Sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation is the emerging health problem of the 21st century. It is imperative health practitioners, governments, schools and parents learn more about it. The human health stakes are significant” Dr. William Rea, former president of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine [11]

Electrohypersensitive woman cover with emf shielding fabric

The European Parliament “calls on Member States to follow the example of Sweden and to recognize persons that suffer from electrohypersensitivity as being disabled so as to grant them adequate protection as well as equal opportunities.” [12].

The effect on the lives of people affected is often dramatic as it is difficult to work and move in public places because of excessive presence of artificial radiation.

For many it is necessary to live in  wireless free zones, like those created in hospitals in Sweden [13] or the Drôme, France (see photo) which has been declared a haven for people sensitive to radiation [14].

We encourage governments to (…) designate wireless-free zones in cities, in public buildings (schools, hospitals, residential areas) and, on public transit, to permit access by persons who are hypersensitive to EMF. Benevento Resolution (2006), International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety (IECEMS) [15]

“It is evident that various biological alterations, including immune system modulation, are present in electrohypersensitive persons. There must be an end to the pervasive nonchalance, indifference and lack of heartfelt respect for the plight of these persons. It is clear something serious has happened and is happening. Every aspect of electrohypersensitive peoples’ lives, including the ability to work productively in society, have healthy relations and find safe, permanent housing, is at stake. The basics of life are becoming increasingly inaccessible to a growing percentage of the world’s population. I strongly advise all governments to take the issue of electromagnetic health hazards seriously and to take action while there is still time. There is too great a risk that the ever increasing RF-based communications technologies represent a real danger to humans, especially because of their exponential, ongoing and unchecked growth. Governments should act decisively to protect public health by changing the exposure standards to be biologically-based, communicating the results of the independent science on this topic and aggressively researching links with a multitude of associated medical conditions.” Dr. Johansson, Neurology Section, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm [11]

More about wireless free zones…

What should doctors and patients know

Chronic burden from artificial electromagnetic radiation is an important biological factor that should not be overlooked in the diagnosis of diseases and chronic symptoms.

Electromagnetic pollution may be the real cause behind multitude of diseases with similar symptoms characterized by doctors as chronic fatigue syndrome, myalgic encephalomyelitis, chronic immune dysfunction, kidney failure, encephalopathy, environmental hypersensitivity, psychosomatic reactions, etc.

Children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with allergies or weakened immune systems are at high risk.

Also, women are more affected by the disease [16], since their brains due to hormonal differences are more vulnerable to radiation.

Electrohypersensitivity in Switzerland

[Evidenziamo quanto segue:

<<For Anton Fernhout of ARA, if an intoxication by heavy metals can be the main factor causing electrohypersensitivity, then it can also occur after prolonged exposure to non-ionizing waves.  “This occurs with any intoxication;  the body is capable of stocking a certain dose of a toxic substance.  Once attaining a certain threshold, it is too much and the floodgates open.”>>]

Everyday life for electrohypersensitive persons is a real ordeal in our hyperconnected society. Cédric Sandoz

Waves, this treacherous enemy
by Gregory Balmat, lacote.ch, 30 September 2015 (translation from French by the Editor of “Towards Better Health”)

Inquiry:  Electrohypersensitivity can make life nearly impossible.  The phenomenon is given far too little recognition in Switzerland.

Migraine headaches, skin burns, joint pains, sharp stinging sensations, this is just a small sample of the physical suffering experienced daily by electrohypersensitive persons when they are exposed to electromagnetic fields or electrosmog.

Ills that are sufficiently painful to completely upset living.  The status of this disorder remains unclear in many countries, including Switzerland.

In August, in France, the disability of a woman was recognized by the Incapacity Dispute Court of Toulouse because of her electrohypersensitivity (EHS).  In evaluating her functional disability at 85%, the French court allowed her to receive an allowance as a handicapped adult, a first in the Hexagone which could set a judicial precedent and also radically transform the status of French electrohypersensitive persons.

From cause to symptom

In Switzerland, for the time being the recommendations of WHO are being followed, which recognize the symtpoms of affected persons but do not confirm the causal link between their ills and non-ionizing radiation.  “These persons are suffering, it’s undeniable.  But at present, there is no scientific evidence of a causal relationship between exposure to electromagnetic fields and the symptoms of persons suffering from electrohypersensitivity”, explains Dr. Isabelle Rossi, deputy cantonal physician for canton Vaud.

A lack of causality which risks to cause a problem if an electrohypersensitive person knocks on the door of the Disability Insurance (Assurance invalidité – AI) in Switzerland.  “In order for us to be able to consider this, we need to have a medical certificate which links the professional environment of the applicant and the suffering he is experiencing.  Since in Switzerland, this link is not recognized by the medical profession, there is little chance that the case would be solid and thus accepted,” explains Dominique Dorthe, spokesperson for the Disability Insurance Office for canton Vaud.  He adds that although his office has never handled cases of electrohypersensitivity, it does not mean that affected persons have not requested its services for related disorders like depression.

Physicians’ lack of awareness

This lack of recognition directly affects the detection of electrohypersensitivity.  “Diagnosis is basically complicated,” explains Anton Fernhout of the Association romande alerte (ARA), which fights for more restrictive norms concerning electrosmog.  “The symptoms are non-specific and can be related to many illnesses.  In Switzerland, the medical profession is little aware of environmental medicine.  Practitioners who make the link are rare.”  Some countries are nevertheless ahead regarding consideration of electrohypersensitivity.  In particular, Sweden treats the issue very seriously especially when it is linked to the professional activity of the affected person.  “Austrian physicians have developed a protocol for the diagnosis of electrohypersensitivity but few Swiss practitioners are aware of its existence and even fewer use it.  It is particularly true in the case of French-speaking Switzerland,” regrets the vice-president of ARA, an environmental engineer by training.

Ways exist, however, to alleviate the suffering of electrohypersensitive persons.  An intoxication by heavy metals [see text below] could be the cause in certain cases.  But according to Anton Fernhout, it is necessary to try to provide places that are less exposed to non-ionizing radiation, such as the apartment building in Zurich which is exclusively for environmentally intoxicated persons.  It must be noted that there exists practically no white zone in Switzerland.
Right now, it is not a question of revising the norms in place for emission levels of relay antennas or mobile phones.  The cantonal department of the environment which is dealing with the issue explains that technological surveillance is in place and they are looking at studies on the subject.  There is a plethora of studies but their conclusions cast doubt.  “Most of the works deal with acute, short-term exposure to electromagnetic fields.  There are, by contrast, less studies on the long-term effect of exposure to electromagnetic fields on health.  These studies do not imply the existence of a causal link which, however, does not mean that there is the absence of an effect,” comments the deputy cantonal physician.

Moreover, the fact that many researchers are financed by the telecommucations giants leaves one unsure of their impartiality.

A culprit called heavy metals

Aluminum, lead, mercury, silver, tin.  These “heavy” metals are present in the human body.  Aluminum is for example used as an adjuvant in certain vaccines, while mercury is present in old dental fillings (still current in France due to cost considerations).  These substances, however, are potentially toxic to the body.  They represent a credible indicator for electrohypersensitive persons.  “In some persons, an excessive presence of heavy metals can damage the immune system and favor the proliferation of opportunistic conditions such as the fungal infection Candida albicans which is particularly electrosensitive”, explains Dr. Daniel Chervet at Swiss Medical Detox in Nyon.  More generally, these heavy metals can affect the nervous system:  “Electromagnetic fields make the protective layer of the brain, the blood-brain-barrier, more permeable and this can favor the intoxication of the brain by heavy metals.   The practitioner has already treated patients suffering from EHS with chelation therapy, noting a decrease in symptoms.  For Anton Fernhout of ARA, if an intoxication by heavy metals can be the main factor causing electrohypersensitivity, then it can also occur after prolonged exposure to non-ionizing waves.  “This occurs with any intoxication;  the body is capable of stocking a certain dose of a toxic substance.  Once attaining a certain threshold, it is too much and the floodgates open.”

24 settembre 2013 – “sexandthestress.vanityfair.it”, di Elisabetta Ambrosi

I sintomi?

WIRELESS: A QUALI PERICOLI SIAMO ESPOSTI?

14 gennaio 2016 – “ningishzidda.altervista.org”

Allora, Ho potuto vedere solo i benefici.

Grazie a te.

Tutto è in stand by.

Switzerland: Zurich: The First European Refuge for Electrosensitive People

We do not wish to discourage the initiator of this project, but it seems that the site is badly polluted with cell phone tower radiation.  The article, however, describes well the plight of people living with chemical and electromagnetic sensitivities.

In Zurich, the first European refuge for electrosensitive people
by Solène Cordier, Le Monde, 12 August 2014 (translated by the Editor of this blog)

At first glance, nothing distinguishes this apartment building in the suburbs of Zurich from those surrounding it. Located on the heights of the quiet neighborhood of Leimbach, its sand-colored walls are surrounded by a vast garden of tall grasses. The big trees of the forest of Entlisberg, perched on the adjacent mountain, extend their refreshing shade to the surrounding area.

It is because of the particular setting that the building, destined to welcome people suffering from multiple chemical hypersensitivity (MCS) and electrosensitivity, has been constructed in this location. “Five sites were studied in the beginning,” says Christian Schifferle, the initiator of the project. “Measurements showed that this site was radiated very little thanks to the nearby mountain which offers a protective environment.” The absence of antennas was also a precondition for construction, as well as air quality.

Headaches, chronic fatigue, difficulties concentrating, respiratory problems, depression, food intolerances… the list of disorders of the 14 residents is long. “We do not tolerate fumes from chemical products and electromagnetic wave emissions coming from wireless networks,” says Mr. Schifferle.

At age 59, he says he has been hyper-allergic and electrosensitive since childhood. His suffering has constrained him to live for long periods alone in the forest in a caravan with walls covered in aluminum foil. At that time, all odors assaulted him: perfumes, cleaning products, paints, cigarette smoke… At age 35, he discovered in the press that other people suffered the same symptoms which, when they reached a critical level, constrained these sick people to interrupt all professional and social life. With only his disability pension, Christian decided to fight for recognition of his pathology.

« Today, this building symbolizes our emergence from invisibility, » he says with emotion, « even if in Switzerland as in France, MCS and electrohypersensitivity are not recognized officially as diseases.

A total cost of 4.9 million euros

Completed in December 2013, this first anti-allergic apartment building in Europe cost 6 million Swiss francs (4.9 million euros), the materials and technologies used raising the cost around 25% compared to the usual apartment building in Zurich. The cooperative presided over by Christian Schifferle has benefited from the support of the city which furnished the land of 1,200 square meters and financial aid.

When one goes inside the building, some details betray its specificity. The walls of the common areas painted with lime, the ceilings of raw concrete, and the floor in stone leave an impression of being unfinished. The natural materials were given preference by the architects, who received the support of a chemist during construction. “It is the plaster used for the walls which posed the most difficulty. It was necessary to reduce the additives in order that for it to be tolerated by the residents,” explains the architect, Andreas Zimmermann.

In order to provide protection from electromagnetic waves, fiberglass was used in place of the usual metallic frame. At the entrance of each apartment, a sealed-off area has been foreseen to remove clothes that have too much of an odor and each room is equipped with a system of air purification. In the basement, next to the communal washing machine, there are authorized detergents and cleaning products, all labeled, “odorless” and “without dyes”.

The day before our arrival, Mr. Schifferle explained the rules: no cell phone, no smoking, no perfume is tolerated inside the building. “I have two smartphones but they are nearly all the time in “airplane” mode. I use them to take photos, one of my passions,” says Christian. For communication related to his activity as president of the cooperative and of a foundation for recognition of MCS and electrosensitivity, he uses a corded telephone and a computer connected by cable to the Internet.

Moreover, a special shielding covers all the electric cables in the building which has a minimum number of outlets. Differing from other electrosensitive people, the intolerance of the residents to waves concerns only high frequencies (mobile phones and Wi-Fi).

An inexistent social life

For Christian as well as his 13 neighbors, this place serves as a refuge. Conceived as a Faraday cage, it allows each person to recharge his/her batteries and hope to again return to normal activities.

Marc (his first name has been changed) is 32 years old. Originally from Fribourg, he moved here in April. Like Christian, he receives a disability pension for reasons other than electrosensitivity and MCS. However, after several experiments, he arrived at the conclusion that his exhausted state was very likely due to exposure to waves and chemical products. “They diagnosed me with anxiety disorder, but I believe that this is not the cause but a consequence of my fragility,” he explains.

The victim of severe digestive disorders, chronic exhaustion and food allergies since childhood, Marc had to abandon his studies at age 22. He has never succeeded in holding down a job for more than several months. A year ago, he discovered that his condition substantially improved when he was not in contact with waves. “I slept on many occasions in the cellar of my parents, then I went to live for some time at a farm in the Jura,” he confided, before learning through his brother of the existence of an apartment building project in Leimbach and submitting his application.

Since settling in, he has the impression that his state of health has slightly improved. To his great surprise, in arriving in Leimbach, he met several persons his age. His neighbors include a 28-year-old woman who has been living there since the beginning of the year with her companion who does not suffer from any pathology.

With the exception of the latter person, in order to obtain an apartment, all the residents of the building have had to justify their symptoms by presenting a medical certificate. Certain social criteria are also required to benefit from an apartment whose monthly rent is between 1,300 and 1,600 Swiss francs (1,000 and 1,400 euros), in great part borne by the city of Zurich.

The city of Zurich is awaiting the results of an evaluation conducted by the University of Bern of the inhabitants of this pilot project for an eventual repetition of the experiment. Christian Schifferle has already looked at land in the Ticino and in France on the Côte d’Azur. “For people like us, it would be wonderful to imagine being able to go on vacation”, he says, smiling.

Translated by Agneta Jonsson
Revised by Rainer Nyberg. Nov. 27, 2015

Professor Rainer Nyberg changed his opinion of wireless technology in March 2013. At that time he had been lecturing in Finland and Sweden for many years and had written books about the uses and benefits of online learning. In this interview, for TV-Finland’s Channel, he explains how he found out about the health risks directly linked to wireless emissions from the technology he had assumed would only have positive effects.

What started your interest in wireless technology and its effects on health?

It actually began with my deep interest and involvement in new technology. As a teacher-trainer at the Faculty of Education I also started projects on IT-pedagogy and e-Learning. This resulted, among other things, in two books. One was How To Teach Online Education, another was a 350 page Research Guide, with 120 pages on how the Internet can be used to search for scientific information.

So your starting point was about the benefits, and not about the harmful effects?

Yes, definitely. I could only see the benefits then. I had been using cellphones for a long time and wifi-gadgets too. While I was working intensively on the fifth edition of the Research Guide I used both a wireless keyboard and mouse, but started getting a prickling sensation in my fingers. I wondered, why is this happening? Around that time, just before Christmas 2012, I read my grandchild’s letter to Santa Claus, “Please, please Santa, most of all I want to have an iPad.”

How did you react to that wish?

I thought it was great, really great that my grandchild wanted to use computers. At that time I had no idea there could be problems too. I just wanted to promote it, so I bought her an iPad.

Now you have explored the research available in this field, and learned about the injurious health effects. Are you surprised about what you found out from different research studies?

Yes, very surprised. Actually it started with my sister sending me a newspaper article from Sweden about how cellphones and iPads may be harmful to health. That’s silly, I thought. How could that be? Everyone’s using them. But I also thought, I may as well look into it. So in March 2013 I spent three weeks researching. I had been teaching information retrieval and had just written 120 pages in the Research Guide, so I knew how to do online research. We have easy access to fantastic tools at the university, the NELLI portal, where we can search many large scientific databases for free, as well as retrieve and print articles very fast.

What was your first impression? What did you find?

The first thing that really made an impression on me was the warning by the Council of Europe. In 2011 they called on all of the member states of the European Union by basically saying: you must warn all your citizens that there is a danger to cellphone technology and wireless internet. Children especially need to be warned, because they are particularly sensitive. Their cranium is thinner and more susceptible because they’re still growing. I got the message. Yes, protect the children. The warning from the Council of Europe also made it clear that if we don’t do something now, it could lead to devastating human and economic costs.

So you became absorbed in this new knowledge. What happened then?

I became quite concerned and continued looking deeper into scientific reports. The recommendation from the Council of Europe is from a socio-political standpoint but based on science. So I thought I’d better read up on the science. Among many findings I read the new BioInitiative Report of 2012 that included 1800 reviewed studies. The scientists concluded: If we don’t do something now, we may soon see a global epidemic of brain damage. Children are most vulnerable to the effects of pulsed electromagnetic radiation. And of course I thought of my grandchild, to whom I had just given an iPad.

I take it that’s quite challenging for a senior educator to hear?

That’s when I became very troubled about the technology I had been promoting in my books and lectures. I now understand that wired connectivity causes fewer problems and wireless creates many kinds of problems. Millions of people are affected.

Injuries to the brain’s blood vessels have been discovered as well. In our brains we have about 600 km of blood vessels. They have to feed 60-100 billion nerve cells with oxygen and glucose. Even if each nerve cell is extremely small, every nerve cell has many microscopic branches. The longest branch from each neuron (nerve cell), which includes axons (nerve fibers), is between one millimeter and 20 cm. The average is less than a millimeter. However, if we were to connect all these neurons and use only the longest branch from each one and put all neurons in a line, it would reach four times around the equator. Each neuron can have contacts (synapses) to more than thousands of other neurons.

With this context I started to understand why the brain was particularly sensitive. The blood vessels in the brain are far-reaching and extremely thin, and that’s where one problem lies. As it turns out, the thin blood vessels in the brain have walls that are even thinner. When someone is exposed to a cellphone or other wireless radiation, the walls of the blood vessels start to leak. A protein from the blood (albumin) can also leak out to the brain cells and has the potential to kill nerve cells. This has been shown in pictures in research reports from Sweden, published by professors Bertil Persson and Leif Salford in Lund. They studied the effects of active cellphone radiation in close vicinity to a box where rats ran freely. They found that even weak radiation causes damage to the blood vessels and the brain cells in the rats after only 2 hours of exposure. Imagine what can happen to children and adults who hold cellphones close to their ears and brains for several hours every week for years?

Your lecture today is about health consequences from staying too long in wireless environments. What steps have you personally taken to solve this problem?

Nowadays I keep the cellphone in flight mode 99% of the time to reduce emissions. I don’t use this ’smart’ technology much anymore, even though I always had my phone with me and on me for many years. Now I mostly leave it at home, or have it turned off, but check for messages. At home I use wired internet and a wired keyboard and mouse. I also replaced the wireless DECT phone with a traditional wired phone, and I avoid places with high levels of electromagnetic radiation.

As a guest lecturer, what will your key message be today?

First of all I will give a brief overview of how important an instrument our brain is. It’s the most complex structure in our world. It is more complex than any aircraft and so on. It’s very sensitive to electromagnetic pulses. All communication in our brains and bodies is also dependent on electric pulses, which are much weaker than man-made digital electromagnetic pulses. In airplanes you are not allowed to use cellphones because it might disturb the electronic equipment on board. Yet most people still think that a cellphone could not harm the brain, which is much more complex than an airplane and runs on much weaker electric pulses. I will also talk about various damages caused by wireless gadgets, but above all how to protect yourself and how to avoid being exposed to too much electromagnetic radiation.

Based on what you have said so far, your recommendation is that it pays to use traditional cable connectivity and just use wireless networks when we have no other choice. Is that about right?

Yes, it’s much better to use cable internet whenever possible, but you can’t use cable for cell phones, tablets and iPads, because they only function on wireless networks. All digital communication uses high frequencies. Tablets are not held to the ear, but you sit with them in your lap, maybe even while holding a child. Boys and men often keep their smartphone in their pockets. Research shows that sperm die from such exposure, and the sperm that survive is of less quality.
One experiment (by A. Balmori) found a marked difference between two containers of tadpoles placed 140 meters from a celltower. One container was shielded by a Faraday cage. In that container only 4% died, but 90% of the tadpoles died in the unprotected one, and deformities were found among the remaining 10%. No wonder then that sperm die or are damaged if you carry a smartphone in a pants pocket. Frogs, people and birds have also been studied, and the results show that they were also negatively affected by celltowers. This is not just about cancer. Immediate injury is noticeable on EEG, brain activity changes, and also damages to the DNA.
So there are many different types of damage. That’s why it’s so important to protect children and not install wireless networks and iPads in the schools. The worst scenario is when many tablets are in use at the same time and in the same room, as in schools, because they continually search to connect to the same wifi-modem. It’s like every iPad is shouting at the same time to the modem and this electromagnetic smog just gets louder and louder. That’s when it becomes particularly harmful. How would kids know if their teachers do not understand the risks?

Lots of important issues to talk about today. Thank you so much for this interview, and
I wish you all the best with your lecture.
Thank you too.

END

Reported Health Effects From Non-Ionizing RF Radiation

Low Level RF Radiation Health Concern

The following studies indicate biological effects at cell phone rf radiation exposure levels which are far below what can be explained by “thermal effects”, and well within the range people are commonly exposed to every day on their cell phones.

NOTE: Most of these below exposures levels are FAR BELOW the current advisory exposure standards in the US, which are based on thermal effects only.  Click here to learn why SAR levels should not be used as a safety standard

Note: For an effect to be considered truly “nonthermal”, that is, a “microwave effect”, they must be experimentally distinguishable from heating effects due to absorbed RF energy as measured with SAR Testing.

One more strong point to validate that SAR testing is not adequate for judging a cell phone users safety.

With SAR testing, Dummy heads are filled with solutions to simulate brain conductivity and probed to measure depth and intensity. Amazingly enough regulatory agencies have not deemed it necessary to measure exposure to eyes.  Eye’s are unprotected by the skull and comprised of cells that are extremely sensitive to electromagnetic energy.
